IGI vs GIA: Which Diamond Certificate Is Better?
IGI and GIA are the two labs that grade most diamonds, including lab grown ones. Both are trusted, but they're not identical in how strict they grade or what they cost. The short version: both IGI and GIA are respected independent labs that grade a diamond's 4Cs, cut, colour, clarity, and carat, and issue a report. GIA is the older, best-known name and is often seen as the strictest grader, especially for mined diamonds. IGI grades the large majority of lab grown diamonds, is widely used worldwide, and usually costs less and turns around faster. For a lab grown diamond, an IGI report is the standard and is perfectly trustworthy; for a mined diamond, many people prefer GIA. Either way, what matters most is that your diamond comes with a real report from one of these labs. At Lux Jewels every diamond we set is certified by IGI or GIA, so you're never taking our word for the quality.

What is GIA?
The GIA, or Gemological Institute of America, is the lab that created the modern 4Cs and the diamond grading scale everyone uses.
It's the oldest and best-known name in diamond grading, founded in 1931, and it's widely regarded as the strictest, most consistent grader, especially for mined diamonds. A GIA report carries a lot of weight at resale and with appraisers. GIA also grades lab grown diamonds, though for years it described them differently from mined stones. If you want the most recognised name on a mined diamond, GIA is the usual choice.

What is IGI?
The IGI, or International Gemological Institute, is a large global lab that grades the majority of the world's lab grown diamonds.
Founded in 1975, IGI has labs around the world and grades both mined and lab grown stones on the same 4Cs. For lab grown diamonds in particular, IGI is the standard, most lab grown stones you'll see come with an IGI report. It usually costs less and turns around faster than GIA, which is part of why it dominates the lab grown space. An IGI report on a lab grown diamond is reliable and widely accepted.

IGI vs GIA at a glance
The honest differences, laid out simply.
| Â | GIA | IGI |
|---|---|---|
| Founded | 1931 | 1975 |
| Best known for | Mined diamonds | Lab grown diamonds |
| Grading reputation | Strictest, most consistent | Reliable and widely accepted |
| Grades the 4Cs | Yes | Yes |
| Cost & speed | Higher cost, slower | Lower cost, faster |
| Best for | A mined diamond, or top resale recognition | A lab grown diamond, the standard |
Both are real, independent labs. For a lab grown diamond, an IGI report is the norm and is trusted; for a mined diamond, GIA is the most recognised.
What's on a diamond grading report?
Whether it's IGI or GIA, the report grades the same four things, the 4Cs. Cut is how well the diamond is proportioned and how brightly it returns light. Colour is graded from D, the most colourless, down the alphabet. Clarity is how free it is of tiny inclusions. Carat is the weight. The report also notes the shape, measurements, and whether the diamond is lab grown or mined.
This is what makes a certificate so useful: it's an independent description of exactly what you're buying, so two diamonds can be compared fairly and you're never relying on a seller's word. Every diamond we set comes with its IGI or GIA report.
Should you choose an IGI or GIA diamond?
For a lab grown diamond, an IGI report is the standard and is exactly what you should expect, it's trusted, detailed, and widely accepted. You don't need to pay extra to chase a GIA report on a lab grown stone unless you specifically want it. For a mined diamond, or if top resale recognition matters to you, GIA is the most respected name and worth looking for.
The real rule is simpler than the IGI-versus-GIA debate: never buy a diamond without a report from one of these labs. An uncertified "deal" is the thing to avoid, because you have no independent proof of what you're getting.

IGI vs GIA FAQs
Is IGI as good as GIA?
For lab grown diamonds, yes, IGI is the standard and is fully trusted. GIA has a stricter, more consistent reputation overall, especially on mined diamonds, but both are real independent labs grading the same 4Cs. For a lab grown stone, an IGI report is exactly what you should expect.
Which lab grades lab grown diamonds?
Mostly IGI. The large majority of lab grown diamonds are graded by IGI, which is why you'll usually see an IGI report with a lab grown stone. GIA grades them too, but IGI is the standard in this space.
Why is a GIA diamond sometimes more expensive?
A GIA report costs more and can take longer, and GIA's stricter grading reputation adds confidence at resale, so GIA-graded mined diamonds can carry a small premium. It reflects the report, not a different diamond. For lab grown, IGI is the norm and there's no need to pay extra for GIA.
Can you compare an IGI and a GIA diamond directly?
You can, but keep in mind the labs can grade slightly differently, so an IGI VS1 and a GIA VS1 may not be identical. The reports are still the fairest way to compare two diamonds, just compare like with like where you can, and lean on a jeweller to interpret them.
Are your diamonds IGI or GIA certified?
Yes. Every diamond we set at Lux Jewels is graded and certified by IGI or GIA, and you get the report with your piece. As Canada's first lab grown diamond jeweller since 2015, we won't set a stone you can't independently verify.
