Walk into any chain jewelry store in Canada and you'll see the same thing

Walk into any chain jewelry store in Canada and you’ll see the same thing. Rows of rings pulled from a factory catalog, sitting under glass, marked up 2.5x to 4x. The salesperson earns a commission. The landlord collects rent. Head office takes its cut. By the time a ring lands on your finger, you’ve paid for a lot of things that have nothing to do with your diamond’s cut grade, your setting’s craftsmanship, or the GIA certificate that proves what you’re actually getting.

The average Canadian spends around $3,500 on an engagement ring. Some of my clients spend less. Others spend more. What they don’t spend money on is somebody else’s overhead. That matters because on a $6,000 budget, the difference between a chain store and a direct designer can mean jumping from a 0.8-carat diamond to a 1.5-carat diamond in the same color and clarity range. Same money. Very different ring on her finger.

Start with a conversation

Free consultation. 30-40 minutes. Video call. I’ll walk you through what’s realistic at your budget. No obligation.

Why Canadian Clients Choose Lux Jewels

No inventory. No retail lease. No commissioned salespeople. Your money goes into your diamond and your setting, not my business expenses. That’s the short version.

The longer version? When you work with me, you’re not choosing from what’s available in a display case. You tell me the shape you love – oval, round brilliant, cushion cut, emerald cut, pear, princess – and I source that specific diamond. You see the stone on video. You review the full GIA or IGI certificate. Nothing moves forward until you approve it.

Then we design the setting. Solitaire for clean simplicity. Hidden halo for extra sparkle without the bulk. Three-stone if the symbolism matters. Bezel for active lifestyles. Pave band for maximum shimmer. I work in 14K gold (yellow, white, rose), 18K gold, and platinum. All gold is repurposed gold. Your ring gets built from scratch. One person touched your diamond. One team made your ring. That’s it.

Every diamond I source meets what I call the Type IIa standard. Not all diamonds are grown equal, and the differences show up in brilliance, color, and long-term durability. For the full explanation of why that matters, see our lab grown engagement rings buyer’s guide.

Custom Engagement Rings Across Canada

You don’t need to live in Vancouver to work with Lux Jewels. Virtual consultations mean geography isn’t a barrier. Here’s what the landscape looks like in Canada’s major markets.

Vancouver, BC

Home base. Vancouver has strong independent jewelers – Era Design on Main Street, for example – plus the usual chains at Pacific Centre and Metrotown. The challenge in Vancouver is rent. Robson Street and Gastown retail space drives markup that has nothing to do with your diamond. Lux Jewels operates without that overhead. For the full local picture, see our engagement rings Vancouver guide.

Toronto, ON

Toronto’s Spadina diamond district and Yorkdale Mall give you options, but options don’t guarantee value. Kimberfire does great custom work locally. For buyers outside the GTA, virtual consultation gets you the same direct-sourcing access without driving to Spadina. One thing to factor in: Ontario’s 13% HST adds $650 on a $5,000 ring.

Montreal, QC

Montreal’s jewelry scene is strong – Ecksand produces beautiful work in their Plateau atelier. But Quebec buyers face the highest combined tax rate in Canada at 14.975% (GST + QST). On a $5,000 ring, that’s $749 in tax. Something to budget for regardless of where you buy.

Calgary and Edmonton, AB

Alberta’s 5% GST-only rate makes it the most tax-friendly province for ring shopping. On a $6,000 ring, you save $360 to $600 compared to Ontario or Quebec. Lux Jewels ships to your door anywhere in Alberta.

Ottawa, Winnipeg, Halifax, and Everywhere Else

I’ve shipped finished rings to Yellowknife, Charlottetown, St. John’s, and everywhere between. Same process, same quality, same FedEx Priority Overnight delivery. A client in Saskatoon gets the same consultation as a client in downtown Vancouver.

Engagement Ring Pricing in Canada (2026)

Three things drive the cost of an engagement ring: the diamond (60-80% of total), the metal and setting ($500 to $3,000+ depending on complexity), and who you buy from. Here’s what each budget looks like with Lux Jewels.

A note on pricing

Pricing varies based on diamond availability, gold and platinum spot prices, and design complexity. All figures approximate.

Lab Grown vs Mined Diamonds for Canadian Buyers

Lab grown diamonds typically cost a fraction of what mined diamonds cost at identical cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Same crystal structure. Same 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. Same optical properties. The FTC updated their definition of “diamond” in 2018 to include lab grown stones.

Canada has a unique position here. The Northwest Territories are home to the Diavik and Ekati mines – two of the world’s most significant diamond operations. Canadian-mined diamonds carry strong provenance tracking through programs like CanadaMark. So the choice isn’t just about price. It’s about what matters to you.

Something I tell every Toronto client

I work with both. I don’t push one over the other. We’ll discuss what makes sense for your values and budget during the free consultation. For the full comparison, read our lab grown vs natural diamonds page.

Not sure which diamond type is right for you?

That’s what the free consultation is for. I’ll walk you through both options at your specific budget. Honest advice, no pressure. I’m on your side no matter where you buy.

How to Choose an Engagement Ring in Canada

Forget the three months’ salary rule. De Beers invented that in a 1930s ad campaign. Here’s what actually matters.

Start with the Cut

Cut is the single most important factor in how a diamond looks on your finger. An Excellent or Ideal cut grade means maximum light return – the diamond sparkles. A poor cut means light leaks out the bottom and the stone looks dull regardless of carat weight. I won’t source anything below Very Good cut for clients, and most Lux Jewels rings use Excellent.

Color and Clarity: Where to Save Smart

Color grades G through H look white to the naked eye in most settings. Paying for D color (completely colorless) adds thousands with no visible difference in a mounted ring. Same logic applies to clarity: VS1 or VS2 diamonds are eye-clean – you won’t see inclusions without magnification. Don’t pay for Flawless unless the certificate is the point.

Setting Styles That Work

A solitaire setting puts all the attention on the diamond. Hidden halos add sparkle from the side without the bulk of a full halo. Bezel settings wrap metal around the stone for maximum protection – ideal for nurses, teachers, or anyone working with their hands. Three-stone settings carry “past, present, future” symbolism. Pave bands add shimmer but cost more to maintain long term.

Pick the Shape That Fits Her Style

Shape

Character

Best For

Round Brilliant

Maximum sparkle, 57/58 facets, classic

Traditional taste, highest light performance

Oval

Elongates the finger, faces up larger per carat

Budget-conscious buyers who want visible size

Cushion Cut

Soft edges, vintage feel, strong fire

Romantic, antique-inspired designs

Emerald Cut

Step facets, hall-of-mirrors effect, architectural

Confident, minimalist style

Pear

Teardrop, unique, elongating

Statement pieces, solitaire pendants too

Princess Cut

Square shape, brilliant faceting, modern

Contemporary taste, geometric settings

2

3

4

Step 01

Free Virtual Consultation

Share inspiration images before our call. During the free consultation, I walk through what’s realistic at your budget and show diamond options. No generic catalog. No “pick from these 12 settings.”

Step 02

Diamond Sourcing and Approval

After we agree on direction, I source your diamond – whether that’s a lab grown oval or a Canadian-mined round brilliant – and send you video and full GIA or IGI certificate. You approve before anything gets made.

Step 03

CAD Rendering

Then the ring goes into CAD rendering. You see a 3D model of exactly what your ring will look like. One design revision is included. Most clients don’t need any.

Step 04

Production and Overnight Delivery

Production takes 4-5 weeks from deposit. You get progress updates as needed. The finished ring ships to your door, anywhere in Canada, FedEx Priority Overnight. Insured. Signature required.
