Retail rent on Robson Street runs $150 to $250 per square foot
Retail rent on Robson Street runs $150 to $250 per square foot. Gastown storefronts aren’t much cheaper. Pacific Centre mall charges premium lease rates that rival downtown Toronto. Every dollar a Vancouver jeweler pays for that floor space gets added to the price of your engagement ring. That’s before commissions, display case lighting, insurance on inventory sitting in glass cabinets, and the advertising budget to get you through the door. By the time you’re looking at a ring in a Vancouver jewelry store, 40-60% of the sticker price has nothing to do with your diamond.
The average Vancouverite spends around $4,000 on an engagement ring – slightly above the national $3,500 average, driven by the city’s higher cost of living. But a $6,000 budget at a Robson Street chain buys you a very different ring than $6,000 with a direct designer. With Lux Jewels, that gap can mean jumping from a 0.8-carat diamond to a 1.5-carat stone in the same color and clarity range. Same money. No middlemen eating into your budget.

Where Vancouver Couples Actually Shop for Engagement Rings
Vancouver’s jewelry scene breaks into three tiers: chain retailers, independent jewelers, and virtual/direct designers. Each model has trade-offs that affect what you get for your money.
Chain Retailers
Spence Diamonds on West Broadway. Birks at Pacific Centre. Peoples at Metropolis Metrotown. Michael Hill scattered across the suburbs. These stores move volume. Walk in, browse a display case, walk out with a ring. The convenience is real, but so is the markup. Chain stores carry pre-made inventory, which means you’re paying for diamonds that were sourced in bulk and settings pulled from a catalog. Commissions incentivize the salesperson to push you up in price. And that Pacific Centre lease? You’re paying for it.
Independent Jewelers
Vancouver has strong independents. Era Design on Main Street does beautiful custom work. Lugaro in West Vancouver has a loyal following. Cavalier Gastown offers a boutique experience. These are real craftspeople, and the quality tends to be higher than chain stores. The trade-off is that independent jewelers still carry overhead – workshop rent, display inventory, staff – and that gets factored into pricing. But you’re closer to the actual maker, which matters.

Virtual and Direct Designers
This is where Lux Jewels operates. No showroom rent. No inventory markup. No commissioned salespeople. You get a dedicated designer who sources your specific diamond based on what you actually need – not what’s sitting in a case. Virtual consultation means your ring is designed around you, built from scratch, and shipped insured to your door. For the detailed breakdown of how the custom design process works, see our custom engagement rings Vancouver page.
Factor | Chain Retailer | Independent Jeweler | Lux Jewels (Virtual) |
Markup over wholesale | 2.5x - 4x | 1.5x - 2.5x | Minimal - no retail layer |
Diamond selection | Pre-made inventory | Curated selection | Sourced per client, GIA/IGI certified |
Customization | Limited to catalog | Full custom available | Every ring built from scratch |
Consultation | In-store salesperson | In-person with designer | 30-40 min video call with Suman |
Overhead you pay for | Mall rent + staff + ads | Workshop + display inventory | None |
Engagement Ring Pricing in Vancouver (2026)
Vancouver’s cost of living pushes engagement ring spending slightly above the national average. Here’s what realistic budgets look like when you buy direct from a designer versus walking into a Vancouver retail store.
Budget (CAD) | Lab Grown at Lux Jewels | Mined at Lux Jewels | Same Budget at Vancouver Chain |
$2,000 - $4,000 | 1.0-1.8 ct, Excellent cut, G-H, VS1-VS2, 14K solitaire | 0.5-0.7 ct, similar grades | 0.4-0.6 ct lab OR 0.3-0.4 ct mined |
$4,000 - $8,000 | 1.5-3.0 ct, D-G color, VVS-VS, hidden halo or pave | 0.8-1.2 ct, good quality | 0.7-1.0 ct lab OR 0.5-0.7 ct mined |
$8,000 - $15,000 | 2.5-5.0 ct, collector-grade | 1.2-2.0 ct, GIA Excellent | 1.5-2.5 ct lab OR 0.8-1.2 ct mined |
$15,000+ | Statement pieces, matched pairs | 2.0+ ct, premium certified | Varies widely |
A note on pricing
Pricing varies based on diamond availability, gold and platinum spot prices, and design complexity. All figures approximate.
Popular Engagement Ring Styles in Vancouver
Vancouver’s style leans modern and nature-inspired. The outdoor lifestyle here shapes what people want on their finger every day. These are the most requested styles from my Vancouver clients.
Shape / Style | Why Vancouver Clients Love It | Best For |
Oval Solitaire | Clean, modern, looks larger per carat. Dominant request in Vancouver. | Active lifestyles, visible size on budget |
Round Brilliant | Maximum sparkle. 57/58 facets. Still the classic for a reason. | Traditional taste, highest light performance |
Bezel Setting | Metal wraps the diamond. Snag-proof, durable. | Hikers, climbers, healthcare workers, ocean sports |
Hidden Halo | Clean from top, sparkle from the side profile. | Modern couples who want understated drama |
Cushion Cut | Soft edges, vintage feel, strong fire and scintillation. | Romantic, antique-inspired aesthetics |
Emerald Cut | Step facets, architectural, hall-of-mirrors effect. | Confident, minimalist style |
Pear Shape | Teardrop, elongating, unique statement. | Distinctive personal style |
Princess Cut | Square shape, brilliant faceting, geometric. | Contemporary, modern design |
One thing I always tell Vancouver clients
Lab Grown vs Mined Diamonds for Vancouver Buyers
Vancouver is one of Canada’s most environmentally conscious cities. That shows up in engagement ring choices. Lab grown diamonds have gained significant traction here because of both the price advantage and the lower environmental footprint.
Lab grown diamonds cost a fraction of mined diamonds at identical cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Same crystal structure. Same 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. The FTC confirmed in 2018 that lab grown stones are real diamonds. They’re grown via CVD or HPHT process in controlled lab environments.
At the same time, Canada’s Diavik and Ekati mines in the Northwest Territories produce some of the world’s most traceable diamonds. If supporting Canadian mining communities matters to you, mined is a strong choice. I work with both – lab grown and ethically sourced natural – and I don’t push one over the other. For the full comparison, read our lab grown vs natural diamonds page.
Not sure which diamond type fits your values and budget?
That’s what the free consultation is for. 30-40 minutes. I’ll walk you through both options at your specific price point. No sales pitch. I’m on your side whether you buy from me or not.
BC Sales Tax on Engagement Rings
British Columbia charges 12% combined tax on jewelry purchases: 5% federal GST plus 7% provincial PST. On a $5,000 ring, that’s $600 in tax. On a $10,000 ring, $1,200.
Something most buyers don’t realize: if you buy from an online seller based outside BC, you still pay BC’s 12% if the ring ships to a BC address. Tax applies based on delivery destination, not seller location.
For a comparison of how BC stacks up against other provinces, see our engagement rings Canada page which includes a full provincial tax table.
How It Works for Toronto Clients
The process is the same whether you’re in Kitsilano or Coquitlam.
