Independent Jewelers
Vancouver has strong independents. Era Design on Main Street does beautiful custom work. Lugaro in West Vancouver has a loyal following. Cavalier Gastown offers a boutique experience. These are real craftspeople, and the quality tends to be higher than chain stores. Lab Grown vs Mined Diamonds for Vancouver Buyers
Vancouver is one of Canada’s most environmentally conscious cities. That shows up in engagement ring choices. Lab grown diamonds have gained significant traction here because of both the price advantage and the lower environmental footprint.
Lab grown diamonds cost a fraction of mined diamonds at identical cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Same crystal structure. Same 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. The FTC confirmed in 2018 that lab grown stones are real diamonds. They’re grown via CVD or HPHT process in controlled lab environments.
At the same time, Canada’s Diavik and Ekati mines in the Northwest Territories produce some of the world’s most traceable diamonds. If supporting Canadian mining communities matters to you, mined is a strong choice. I work with both – lab grown and ethically sourced natural – and I don’t push one over the other. BC Sales Tax on Engagement Rings
British Columbia charges 12% combined tax on jewelry purchases: 5% federal GST plus 7% provincial PST. On a $5,000 ring, that’s $600 in tax. On a $10,000 ring, $1,200.
Something most buyers don’t realize: if you buy from an online seller based outside BC, you still pay BC’s 12% if the ring ships to a BC address. Tax applies based on delivery destination, not seller location.

After we agree on direction, I source your diamond and send you video and full GIA or IGI certificate. You approve the stone before anything gets made.

CAD Rendering
Then the ring goes into CAD rendering – you see a 3D model of exactly what your ring will look like. One design revision is included. Most clients don’t need any.
Step 04
Production and Overnight Delivery
Production takes 4-5 weeks from deposit. You get progress updates as needed. The finished ring ships FedEx Priority Overnight, insured, signature required. Next day delivery is typical for Metro Vancouver addresses.

Lux Jewels operates virtually from Vancouver, BC. I don’t have a retail storefront. Everything is done through video consultation, which means you get the same experience whether you’re in West Vancouver, Surrey, or Langley.
Do you have a showroom I can visit?
No showroom. And that’s by design. Showroom rent in Vancouver runs $8,000 to $25,000 per month depending on neighborhood. That cost goes directly onto ring prices. By operating virtually, every dollar of your budget goes into your diamond and your ring.
How much do engagement rings cost in Vancouver?
The Vancouver average is around $4,000 CAD. Forget the three months’ salary rule – De Beers invented that in a 1930s ad campaign. Custom rings from Lux Jewels start at approximately $2,000 for a lab grown diamond in a 14K gold solitaire setting. There’s no minimum and no formula – I work with your budget.
Can I see my diamond before the ring is made?
Yes. You get video of the actual diamond plus full GIA or IGI certificate before approving the purchase. Nothing gets made until you’re satisfied with the stone.
How long does a custom ring take?
4-5 weeks from deposit. Includes diamond sourcing, CAD design, one revision if needed, and production. Rush orders sometimes possible depending on diamond availability.
Do you offer both lab grown and mined diamonds?
Both. Lab grown diamonds (grown via CVD or HPHT process) and ethically sourced natural diamonds, including Canadian-mined stones from Diavik and Ekati. Lux Jewels has offered both since 2015. We’ll discuss what makes sense during the free consultation.
