Toronto Is Canada's Largest Engagement Ring Market
Toronto is Canada’s largest engagement ring market. It’s also where buyers lose the most money to retail markup. Yorkdale Mall, Yorkville Village, the Eaton Centre, Spadina Avenue’s diamond district – these are expensive places to operate a business. A jeweler on Spadina pays anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 per month in rent. Yorkville boutiques run higher. Every one of those dollars gets baked into the price tag on the ring in your hand. And that’s before display case insurance, staff commissions, and the advertising spend to get you through the door.

Suman Smith
Founder, Lux Jewels · Vancouver · Since 2007
I’m Suman Smith, founder of Lux Jewels, based in Vancouver. I’ve worked in the diamond industry for over 20 years. In 2015 I became the first jeweler in Canada to offer lab grown diamond engagement rings. I started Lux Jewels because I kept seeing the same problem: people getting misled, ending up with lower quality, and overpaying for rings that didn’t match what they were promised. I don’t carry inventory. I don’t take commissions from diamond sellers. I don’t push you toward a bigger stone because it pays me more. What I do is source your diamond directly, design your ring from scratch, and ship it insured to your door in Toronto, across Canada, or the United States.
The average Toronto engagement ring buyer spends between $4,000 and $6,000 – above the national average of $3,500, partly because the city has more high-end retailers competing for your attention. But here’s what those retailers won’t tell you: on a $6,000 budget, the gap between buying from a Spadina district jeweler and buying direct from a designer can mean jumping from a 0.8-carat diamond to a 1.5-carat stone. Same grade. Same certification. Same sparkle. Very different number on the sticker.

Where Toronto Couples Actually Shop for Engagement Rings
Toronto gives you more options than any other city in Canada. That’s both an advantage and a problem, because more options doesn’t mean more transparency.
The Spadina Diamond District
Spadina Avenue between Queen and Dundas has been Toronto’s diamond hub for decades. Dozens of jewelers operate in a few blocks. The advantage is competition – you can compare stones and prices without driving across the city. The disadvantage is that many of these stores operate on commission-based sales, and the pressure to close a deal can override honest guidance. Some are excellent. Some will show you a lower-grade stone and call it something it isn’t. Know what you’re looking at before you walk in.
Yorkville and Bloor Street
Birks at Bloor and Bay. Tiffany used to be here. High-end independent boutiques dot Cumberland Street. Yorkville carries premium pricing because Yorkville is a premium address. If you’re spending $15,000 or more, you’ll find exceptional pieces. Under $10,000, you’re paying Yorkville rent on a mid-range diamond.
Independent Custom Jewelers
Toronto has strong independents doing excellent custom work. Kimberfire operates from a studio near King West with 800+ five-star reviews and direct diamond sourcing. Engage Studio in the downtown core offers a full custom process with resin models before final production. Livia Diamonds near the diamond district specializes in lab grown. Alexis Gallery and Randor have decades of local reputation. These are real craftspeople, and for Toronto buyers who want in-person consultations, they’re strong options.

Virtual and Direct Designers
Virtual and Direct Designers
This is where Lux Jewels fits. No Toronto showroom rent. No inventory. No commissioned salespeople. Virtual consultation means a Toronto client gets the same direct-sourcing access and custom design process as someone in Vancouver, Montreal, or Calgary. The difference shows up in what your money buys. For how the custom process works step by step, see our custom engagement rings Vancouver page. The process is identical for Toronto clients.

Engagement Ring Pricing for Toronto Buyers (2026)
Forget the three months’ salary rule – De Beers invented that in a 1930s ad campaign. Here’s what each budget realistically gets you when buying direct versus walking into a Toronto store.

Popular Engagement Ring Styles in Toronto
Toronto couples tend to lean slightly more classic than Vancouver. Round brilliants and cushion cuts dominate here, though ovals are gaining fast. Here’s what I’m seeing from Toronto clients right now.
Shape / Style | Why Toronto Clients Choose It | Best For |
Round Brilliant | Maximum sparkle. 57/58 facets. The classic that never dates. | Traditional taste, highest light performance |
Oval | Elongates the finger, faces up larger per carat. Rising fast in Toronto. | Visible size on budget, modern classic |
Cushion Cut | Soft edges, vintage feel, strong fire and scintillation. | Toronto's vintage architecture lovers |
Emerald Cut | Step facets, architectural, hall-of-mirrors effect. | Confident, minimalist style |
Pear | Teardrop, unique, elongating. | Statement pieces, solitaire pendants too |
Princess Cut | Square shape, brilliant faceting, geometric. | Contemporary, modern design |
Hidden Halo | Clean from top, sparkle from the side. | Modern couples who want understated brilliance |
Bezel Setting | Metal wraps the diamond. Snag-proof. | TTC commuters, active lifestyles, healthcare workers |
Something I tell every Toronto client
The best ring for daily wear in a city where you’re grabbing subway handles and pulling on winter gloves isn’t always the most delicate setting. A bezel or flush mount holds up better through a Toronto winter than a high-prong cathedral. Function first, then beauty.
Lab Grown vs Mined Diamonds for Toronto Buyers
Toronto has embraced lab grown diamonds faster than most Canadian cities. Local jewelers report that roughly 7 in 10 couples now choose lab grown, driven primarily by the size and quality advantage at every budget.
Lab grown diamonds cost a fraction of what mined diamonds cost at identical cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Same crystal structure. Same 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. The FTC confirmed in 2018 that lab grown stones are real diamonds. They’re created via CVD or HPHT process in controlled environments.
Canada’s Diavik and Ekati mines in the Northwest Territories produce some of the world’s most traceable diamonds. If supporting Canadian mining communities matters to you, mined is a strong choice with genuine provenance.
I work with both. I don’t push one over the other. For the full comparison, read our lab grown vs natural diamonds page.

Ontario HST on Engagement Rings
Ontario charges 13% HST on jewelry purchases. On a $5,000 ring, that’s $650 in tax. On a $10,000 ring, $1,300. There’s no way around it – HST applies whether you buy in-store on Spadina or online from a seller anywhere in Canada.
For perspective, Ontario’s 13% is mid-range nationally. Alberta buyers pay only 5% GST. Quebec hits 14.975%. For a full provincial comparison, see our engagement rings Canada page.
How It Works for Toronto Clients
The process is the same whether you’re in the Annex, Scarborough, Mississauga, or Brampton.
