The quick answer: a one carat round diamond measures about 6.5mm across, and carat is a measure of weight, not size. Two diamonds of the same carat can look different sizes depending on their shape and cut, so what you’ll see on the finger is about more than the number on the certificate.
I’m Suman Smith, founder of Lux Jewels. I started this as Canada’s first lab grown diamond company back in 2015, and “how big will it actually look?” is the question I answer most. Here’s how carat really works, how each size reads on the hand, and how to get the most visible diamond for your budget.
What is a carat?
A carat is a unit of weight equal to 0.2 grams, or 200 milligrams. It’s often confused with karat (with a k), which measures gold purity, but they’re completely different things. Carat tells you how much a diamond weighs, not how wide it is, and that’s why two stones of equal carat can look bigger or smaller depending on how they’re cut.
How big is a 1 carat diamond?
A well-cut one carat round brilliant is roughly 6.4 to 6.5mm in diameter, about the width of a pencil eraser. That’s the benchmark most people picture for an engagement ring. Here’s how the common sizes compare for a round brilliant.
| Carat (round) | Approx. diameter | How it reads |
|---|---|---|
| 0.50 ct | ~5.0mm | Delicate and understated. |
| 0.75 ct | ~5.8mm | Noticeable but modest. |
| 1.00 ct | ~6.5mm | The classic engagement size. |
| 1.50 ct | ~7.4mm | Clearly bigger, lots of presence. |
| 2.00 ct | ~8.1mm | A statement stone. |
| 3.00 ct | ~9.3mm | Bold and unmistakable. |
Why do two diamonds of the same carat look different sizes?
Because carat is weight, and weight can hide where you can’t see it. A poorly cut diamond can carry extra weight in a deep bottom, so it weighs a full carat but it’ll look smaller from the top. A well-cut stone spreads its weight into a wider face, so it looks every bit its size. Shape matters too: elongated cuts like oval, marquise, and pear look larger than a round of the same carat because they’re covering more finger.
How does carat size look on the hand?
The same diamond looks bigger on a slender finger and smaller on a wider one, which is why a “good” carat size is personal. As a rough guide, a half carat looks dainty, one carat reads classic on most hands, and two carats and up makes an obvious statement. There’s no number that’s right for everyone. If you want a stone to look larger without paying for more weight, choose an elongated shape, a slim band that makes the stone look proportionally bigger, or a halo setting that frames the centre with smaller diamonds.
How to get a bigger-looking diamond for your budget
Diamond price jumps at the round carat marks (1.00, 2.00), so buying just under, say 0.90 or 1.90, can save a noticeable amount for a size difference you won’t be able to see. Pair that with an excellent cut (which maximises spread and sparkle) and an elongated shape or halo, and you get maximum presence per dollar. And because lab grown diamonds carry no mined markup, the single biggest lever is simply choosing lab grown: the same carat costs far less, so your budget buys a visibly bigger stone.
Does carat work the same for lab grown diamonds?
Yes, exactly the same. A lab grown diamond is a real diamond weighed in the same carats and measured in the same millimetres. The only difference is the price per carat, which is far lower, so lab grown is the easiest way to step up a size, from one carat to one and a half, say, without stepping up your spend. Every stone we set is certified by IGI or GIA so the carat weight is independently verified.
The honest takeaway
Carat is weight, not size, so don’t fixate on the number. A well-cut one carat in an elongated shape can out-sparkle and out-size a heavier, deeper stone. Decide the look you want on the hand, choose an excellent cut, and let lab grown stretch the budget into the size you’re actually after. Diamond carat FAQs
How big is a 1 carat diamond in mm?
A well-cut one carat round brilliant is about 6.4 to 6.5mm in diameter. Elongated shapes like oval can look larger at the same carat because they cover more of the finger.
What is the difference between carat and karat?
Carat measures a diamond’s weight (0.2 grams each). Karat, with a k, measures gold purity, such as 14k or 18k. They sound alike but mean completely different things.
Why do two diamonds of the same carat look different sizes?
Because carat is weight, not width. A deep-cut stone hides weight underneath and looks smaller from the top, while a well-cut one spreads wider and looks its full size. Shape also changes how big a stone appears.
What carat size is best for an engagement ring?
There is no single best size. Half a carat is delicate, one carat is the classic choice, and two carats and up makes a statement. The right size depends on your hand, your style, and your budget.
How can I make a diamond look bigger?
Choose an excellent cut, an elongated shape like oval or pear, a halo setting, or a slim band, and buy just under a round carat mark. Choosing lab grown also lets the same budget buy more carat.
Is carat the same for lab grown diamonds?
Yes. Lab grown diamonds are weighed and measured exactly like mined diamonds. Because they cost far less per carat, they are the easiest way to get a bigger stone for the same budget.
