Quick Answer

An oval lab grown diamond is a real diamond, certified on the same 4Cs, and it looks 5 to 15 percent larger than a round of the same carat weight because the elongated shape spreads more across your finger. At Lux Jewels we custom-design oval rings across Canada and the USA, IGI or GIA certified, with no inflated mined-diamond markup, so your budget goes further on size, clarity, and the setting.

The Modern Choice

Why oval engagement rings are so popular in Canada right now

All the brilliance and fire of a round brilliant cut, in an elongated shape that flatters the finger and looks bigger for the same carat.

The oval has quietly become one of the most-requested shapes in Canada, and the reason isn't hype. An oval diamond gives you the sparkle people love about round diamonds without paying the round-diamond premium, because its long shape spreads the carat weight across your finger instead of hiding it in depth. It's also a shape that doesn't date: a round solitaire is timeless, but the oval keeps that classic backbone in a softer, more modern silhouette. Couples tell us they want a ring that looks current today and still looks right in thirty years, and the oval hits that balance better than almost anything else we set.

More Stone, Same Budget

Why does an oval diamond look bigger than a round?

It comes down to how the carat weight is distributed. A round brilliant carries a lot of its weight in the depth of the stone, the part that sits down in the setting where nobody sees it. An oval spreads its weight across a longer surface, so more of the diamond faces up at you.

In practice, a one carat oval can look about the size of a 1.2 to 1.3 carat round from the top. That's a real, visible difference, and when the centre stone is lab grown, you can size up without the mined-diamond price jump.

What to Watch For

What is the bow-tie effect, and should it worry you?

Every oval diamond has a faint shadow that can run across the centre, shaped a bit like a bow tie. It's a natural result of how light bounces inside an elongated stone. A slight bow tie is normal and most ovals have one. What you want to avoid is a heavy, dark bow tie that kills the sparkle in the middle of the stone.

This is exactly where buying blind online goes wrong. We hand-select each oval and check the bow tie in person before it ever goes into your ring. If a stone has a distracting bow tie, we don't use it.

Get the Shape Right

What length-to-width ratio should you choose?

The length-to-width ratio is how long the oval looks compared to how wide it is. It's the single biggest factor in the personality of the stone.

Real Diamonds, Honest Advice

Are oval lab grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes, completely. A lab grown diamond is carbon crystallised the same way a mined diamond is, with the same hardness, the same brilliance, and the same chemical and optical properties. It is not cubic zirconia and it is not moissanite, which are different materials entirely. An oval lab grown diamond is a genuine diamond, graded on the same 4Cs of cut, colour, clarity, and carat, and certified by IGI or GIA.

I'm Suman Smith, founder of Lux Jewels. I started this as Canada's first lab grown diamond company back in 2015 because I was tired of watching people get misled and overpay for the wrong stone. I don't push you toward a sale. What I do is hand-select every oval, check it in person, and set it so the light reflection is right and there are no dull undertones. Every stone comes with its certificate, so you're never taking my word for it.

Straight Talk on Price

How much does an oval engagement ring cost in Canada?

Choosing a lab grown oval means you're paying for the diamond, not a mined-diamond markup, so your budget goes further on size, clarity, and the setting. I sit in the mid-to-high range among Vancouver jewellers, and what you're paying for is promise integrity: ideal light reflection, no muddy undertones, and a stone I've personally approved. Prices vary with the 4Cs and the metal you choose, and your provincial sales tax applies on top.

I don't believe in vague "starting from" numbers or price breakdowns, because there are too many variables. Book a free consultation and you'll get a straight, itemised quote for the exact oval and setting you want.

Good Questions

Oval engagement ring FAQs

Do oval diamonds look bigger than round diamonds?

Yes. An oval spreads its carat weight across a longer surface than a round, so more of the stone faces up. A one carat oval often looks close to a 1.2 to 1.3 carat round from above.

Are oval lab grown diamonds more affordable than mined ovals?

Yes. With a lab grown oval you pay for the diamond, not a mined-diamond markup, so the same real, certified stone leaves more of your budget for size, clarity, and the setting. It's the same real diamond, just grown instead of mined.

What is the best length-to-width ratio for an oval?

A ratio of 1.30 to 1.35 gives a classic, balanced oval that flatters most hands. For a more elongated look go up to 1.40 to 1.45. We show you a few side by side before you choose.

What is the bow-tie effect in an oval diamond?

It's a faint, bow-tie-shaped shadow that can cross the centre of an oval. A slight one is normal. A heavy, dark bow tie dulls the sparkle, so we hand-select each stone and reject any with a distracting bow tie.

Where can I buy an oval engagement ring in Canada?

Lux Jewels custom-designs oval lab grown diamond engagement rings for clients across Canada and the USA, by appointment and virtual consultation. As Canada's first lab grown diamond jeweller since 2015, we certify every oval with IGI or GIA.
