Quick Answer

Toi et moi is French for "you and me", a ring style with two diamonds set side by side instead of one centre stone. The two stones stand for two people coming together, which is why it's such a meaningful engagement choice. You can pair any two shapes, like an oval and a pear, or match two of the same. At Lux Jewels we custom-design toi et moi rings with real, certified lab grown diamonds across Canada and the USA, IGI or GIA certified, with no inflated mined-diamond markup, so your budget covers two beautiful stones instead of one.

You and Me

What is a toi et moi ring?

A toi et moi ring sets two diamonds side by side on one band, instead of a single centre stone, so the ring itself tells the story of two people.

The name is French for "you and me", and that's exactly the meaning: two stones, two people, joined on one ring. The two diamonds usually sit on a bypass or crossover band that curves them toward each other. You can pair two of the same shape for symmetry, or mix two shapes, like an oval and a pear, for contrast. It's a romantic, individual alternative to the classic solitaire, and it has serious history behind it.

A Ring With History

What does a toi et moi ring symbolise?

The two stones represent two souls coming together, your two lives meeting on a single band. It's a meaning a one-stone ring simply can't carry, which is why couples who want their ring to say something choose it.

The style is centuries old. Napoleon famously proposed to Josephine in 1796 with a toi et moi ring, and it has reappeared on hands from Jackie Kennedy to today's celebrities. Choosing one puts you in a long line of people who wanted their engagement ring to mean "us", not just a stone.

Make It Yours

Which two shapes should you pair?

This is the fun part, and there's no wrong answer. Two matching ovals or two rounds give a clean, balanced, symmetrical look. Mixing shapes, like an oval with a pear, or an emerald cut with a round, makes the ring more individual and is the more popular modern choice. Some couples pick shapes that mean something to each of them.

On a free call I'll show you pairings side by side so you can see how each combination sits on the hand before you decide. Because every ring is custom, you're never limited to a preset design.

Twice the Stone, Smart Budget

Why lab grown makes the most sense for a toi et moi ring

A toi et moi uses two centre-quality diamonds instead of one, so the stones are the biggest part of the budget. That's exactly where lab grown helps most.

Real Diamonds, Honest Advice

Are the diamonds in a toi et moi ring real?

Yes, completely. Every lab grown diamond I set is carbon crystallised the same way a mined diamond is, with the same hardness, brilliance, and chemical and optical properties. It is not cubic zirconia and it is not moissanite, which are different materials. Both stones in your toi et moi ring are genuine diamonds, graded on the same 4Cs and certified by IGI or GIA.

I'm Suman Smith, founder of Lux Jewels. I started this as Canada's first lab grown diamond company back in 2015 because I was tired of watching people get misled and overpay for the wrong stone. For a toi et moi I hand-select both diamonds and match them as a pair, so the two stones look balanced together. Both come with their certificates, so you're never taking my word for it.

Straight Talk

How do you choose the two diamonds?

The trick with a toi et moi is matching. The two stones should agree on colour and look balanced in size, even if the shapes differ, so one doesn't make the other look off. I start with the shapes and feel you want, then match the pair on colour and cut quality, then balance carat against your budget. Near-colourless G to H and eye-clean VS usually look excellent for both stones.

I don't believe in vague "starting from" numbers, because there are too many variables. Book a free consultation and you'll get a straight, itemised quote for the exact pair and setting you want, with no pressure to spend a dollar more than makes sense for you.

Toi et moi ring FAQs

What does toi et moi mean?

Toi et moi is French for "you and me". A toi et moi ring sets two diamonds side by side on one band, with the two stones representing two people coming together. It's the meaning behind the style, and why couples choose it over a single-stone ring.

How do you pronounce toi et moi?

It's pronounced "twah ay mwah". The phrase is French for "you and me", which describes the two-stone design perfectly.

What is the history of the toi et moi ring?

The style is centuries old. Napoleon proposed to Josephine with a toi et moi ring in 1796, and it has appeared on hands from Jackie Kennedy to modern celebrities. Choosing one connects you to a long tradition of rings that mean "us".

Can you mix two different diamond shapes in a toi et moi?

Yes, and many couples do. You can pair two matching shapes for a symmetrical look, or mix shapes like an oval and a pear for a more individual ring. The two stones are matched on colour and balanced in size so they look like they belong together.

Are toi et moi rings more expensive because of two diamonds?

They use two centre-quality stones, so the diamonds are the main cost. Choosing lab grown is what makes it affordable: with no mined-diamond markup, you can have two real, certified diamonds for close to what one mined stone would cost.
