A solitaire engagement ring is a single diamond on a band, with no side stones or halo, so all the attention goes to the centre stone. It's the most classic and most popular engagement ring style, and it works with any diamond shape, round, oval, emerald, cushion, and the rest. At Lux Jewels we custom-design solitaire rings with real, certified lab grown diamonds across Canada and the USA, IGI or GIA certified, with no inflated mined-diamond markup, so every dollar goes into a bigger or better centre diamond.

What is a solitaire engagement ring?
A solitaire is a single diamond on a band, no side stones, no halo, just the stone. It's the most classic engagement ring there is.
The word means "alone", and that's the whole idea: one diamond, on its own, with nothing competing for attention. It has been the default engagement ring for over a century because it's clean, timeless, and never goes out of style. A solitaire also lets the diamond do all the talking, which is why cut quality and the stone itself matter most here. Any shape works as a solitaire, from a classic round to an elongated oval or emerald cut.

Why a solitaire is the best value for a lab grown diamond
Because a solitaire has no side stones or halo, you're not splitting the budget across lots of small accent diamonds. Almost all of it goes into the one centre stone, which means a bigger or higher-quality diamond for the same money.
Stack that on lab grown, where there's no mined-diamond markup, and the centre stone can be noticeably larger or cleaner than a mined solitaire at the same price. If your priority is the diamond itself, a lab grown solitaire is the most direct way to get the most stone.
Which solitaire setting should you choose?
The setting is subtle but it changes the feel. A few choices our clients weigh:
- Four-prong: shows more of the diamond, clean and modern.
- Six-prong: holds the stone more securely and reads a little more classic, popular for round and oval.
- Cathedral: graceful arches lift the stone for extra presence.
- Knife-edge or thin band: a slim band that makes the centre stone look larger.
I'll talk you through what suits your shape and how you use your hands, so the setting protects the stone and flatters it.

How to choose the diamond for your solitaire
With nothing to hide behind, the centre stone's quality is everything. Here's where to focus your budget.
Drives the sparkle. Lock this in first on a solitaire.
Near-colourless looks white and costs less than D to F.
Eye-clean, no inclusions visible without magnification.
Put the rest of the budget here, lab grown stretches it.
On a free call I show you stones at your budget side by side so you can see why one looks better than another, instead of guessing from a spec sheet.
Popular solitaire looks

Are solitaire lab grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes, completely. A lab grown diamond is carbon crystallised the same way a mined diamond is, with the same hardness, the same brilliance, and the same chemical and optical properties. It is not cubic zirconia and it is not moissanite, which are different materials entirely. Your solitaire diamond is a genuine diamond, graded on the same 4Cs of cut, colour, clarity, and carat, and certified by IGI or GIA.
I'm Suman Smith, founder of Lux Jewels. I started this as Canada's first lab grown diamond company back in 2015 because I was tired of watching people get misled and overpay for the wrong stone. On a solitaire the diamond is everything, so I hand-select it in person and check the sparkle and the grade before it's set. Your stone comes with its certificate, so you're never taking my word for it.
How much should you spend on a solitaire?
There's no rule, and I don't believe in the old months-of-salary ones. The right budget is what's comfortable for you. Because a solitaire puts everything into one stone and lab grown carries no mined-diamond markup, your money goes further here than almost any other style, so the same budget buys a noticeably bigger or cleaner centre diamond.
I don't believe in vague "starting from" numbers either, because the 4Cs and setting all move the price. Book a free consultation and you'll get a straight, itemised quote for the exact solitaire you want, with no pressure to spend a dollar more than makes sense for you.

What is a solitaire engagement ring?
A solitaire is a single diamond on a band, with no side stones or halo. It's the most classic and most popular engagement ring style, because it puts all the focus on the one centre stone and never goes out of fashion.
Is a solitaire good value?
Yes, it's one of the best-value styles. With no accent stones splitting the budget, almost all of it goes into the centre diamond, so you get a bigger or higher-quality stone. With lab grown and no mined-diamond markup, that goes even further.
What shape works best for a solitaire?
Any shape works. Round is the timeless classic for maximum sparkle, while oval and emerald cuts look larger and more elongated. The solitaire setting suits them all, so it comes down to the look you want.
How many prongs should a solitaire have?
Four prongs show more of the diamond and look modern; six prongs hold the stone more securely and read a little more classic, which many people prefer for round and oval. We choose based on your shape and how you use your hands.
