Quick Answer

A princess cut lab grown diamond is a real diamond, certified on the same 4Cs, and it's the square brilliant cut, so it carries a lot of sparkle and usually costs less per carat than a round. At Lux Jewels we custom-design princess cut rings across Canada and the USA, IGI or GIA certified, with no inflated mined-diamond markup, so your budget goes further on size, clarity, and the setting.

The Square Brilliant

What is a princess cut diamond?

A square-shaped diamond with brilliant faceting, the princess cut gives you round-style sparkle in a clean, modern square outline.

The princess cut is the most popular square shape, and for good reason. It takes the brilliant faceting that makes a round diamond sparkle and puts it in a sharp, geometric square, so you get plenty of fire with crisp, contemporary lines. It also makes very efficient use of the rough crystal, which is part of why it usually costs less per carat than a round. If you want a stone that sparkles hard and looks current rather than vintage, the princess is hard to beat.

More Stone, Same Budget

Why is a princess cut more affordable than a round?

It comes down to how much of the rough crystal is kept. Cutting a round brilliant wastes a large share of the rough, and you pay for that waste. A princess cut keeps far more of the original crystal, so the same size stone costs less to produce and less to buy.

In practice, a princess cut can run noticeably less than a round of the same carat and quality, which means more size or a better grade for your budget. When the centre stone is lab grown on top of that, there's no mined-diamond markup either, so two savings stack into one ring.

What to Watch For

Do princess cut diamond corners chip?

The four sharp corners are the most fragile part of a princess cut, and an exposed corner can chip on a hard knock. It's the main thing to plan for with this shape, and the fix is simple: protective prongs that cover each corner, holding the stone securely and shielding the points.

This is where the setting matters, and where buying blind online goes wrong. We design every princess ring with the corners properly protected, and we hand-check each stone before it goes in. Done right, a princess cut is tough and wears beautifully every day.

Get the Quality Right

What colour and clarity should you choose for a princess cut?

Because of how its facets work, a princess hides colour and small inclusions better than some shapes, so you can be smart about where you spend.

Real Diamonds, Honest Advice

Are princess cut lab grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes, completely. A lab grown diamond is carbon crystallised the same way a mined diamond is, with the same hardness, the same brilliance, and the same chemical and optical properties. It is not cubic zirconia and it is not moissanite, which are different materials entirely. A princess cut lab grown diamond is a genuine diamond, graded on the same 4Cs of cut, colour, clarity, and carat, and certified by IGI or GIA.

I'm Suman Smith, founder of Lux Jewels. I started this as Canada's first lab grown diamond company back in 2015 because I was tired of watching people get misled and overpay for the wrong stone. I don't push you toward a sale. What I do is hand-select every princess cut, check the corners and the sparkle in person, and set it so the light reflection is right and there are no dull undertones. Every stone comes with its certificate, so you're never taking my word for it.

Built to Last

How do you protect a princess cut for everyday wear?

The square corners are the part to plan for, so the setting does real work here. Protective prongs that cup each corner keep the stone secure and shield the points from knocks. A lower-profile setting or a pave band that sits close to the corners adds another layer of protection without hiding the stone.

I design every princess setting with the corners properly covered, and we'll talk through how you use your hands so the build suits your life, not just a display photo. Book a free consultation and you'll get a straight, itemised quote for the exact princess cut and setting you want, with no pressure to spend a dollar more than makes sense for you.

Good Questions

Princess cut engagement ring FAQs

Is a princess cut more affordable than a round diamond?

Usually, yes. A princess cut keeps far more of the rough crystal than a round, so it costs less to produce and less to buy. A princess can run noticeably less than a round of the same carat and quality, and with lab grown there is no mined-diamond markup on top.

Do princess cut diamonds sparkle as much as round?

A princess cut uses brilliant faceting like a round, so it sparkles hard. A round still has the edge for pure brilliance, but a well-cut princess is very close and gives you a clean square look that a round cannot.

Do princess cut corners chip easily?

The four sharp corners are the most fragile part, but protective prongs that cover each corner keep the stone secure. We design every princess setting with the corners protected, so it wears beautifully every day.

What colour and clarity is best for a princess cut?

A princess hides colour and small inclusions well, so near-colourless G to H and eye-clean VS clarity usually look excellent for less than top grades. Cut quality matters most, so we lock that in first.

Where can I buy a princess cut engagement ring in Canada?

Lux Jewels custom-designs princess cut lab grown diamond engagement rings for clients across Canada and the USA, by appointment and virtual consultation. As Canada's first lab grown diamond jeweller since 2015, we certify every princess cut with IGI or GIA.
